    If someone bought a car that had a VIN that did not match the body numbers, what could the buyer do about it? Does the person have any legal recourse?  Is he stuck with a car he will have a tough time selling? What if there was a title that matched the VIN?
    Why would someone change a VIN and not remove or change the body numbers?

    If they re-vin the car that is illegal, if they replaced body panels and re-stamped to match the vin, that is un-ethical.

    Chances are the car will be confiscated for outright VIN fraud cases, and the buyer will be SOL.  Just look at Unique Performance with the Mustangs, etc.  Every car was taken and later sold at auction.  Buyers who put down a deposit were screwed, and will have to take the owners to court.

    If the car is a 1968 or earlier model, then the body numbers will not match the VIN, this is normal.

    If it is a 1969 or newer model, report it to the police & let them sort it out, the body may have been re-numbered because it is stolen.

    You can sue to get your money back, if the seller did, or knew of it, it he can be ordered to pay restitution. If someone did it before him the police can track it backwards & see who first titled it this way, then you can sue him too.

    There are also cases where the factory typoed the body numbers, so if it appears as 100011 & the  VIN ends in 100001 as an example it could be a factory screw up.

    you have several options,1 talk to the seller,2 keep your mouth shut and stay out of trouble,you did buy it and it is your fault for not checking the #$.3 cut it up and use it for parts.4 buy a set of all matching #s and re# it your self~! or puzzy out and call the cops,spend money and go broke causing everybody trouble. I bought a 68 charger that was a complete body no drive line didn't even think about the #s till 3 months later. car metal # all match but the dash had been changed different steering column and drivers seat. You have to realise these cars are almost 40 years old and like my 68 it might have been in a impound or a junk yard. Some dodge lover saved it from the crusher but not the parts puller. I here there is a outfit in colorado that does vin tags.I believe it is called Datatags,I am not sure so don't quote me on that. but with the right documentation you can get a dash vin tag. or in my case with all the body #s matching I will stamp my own!

    if your stuck with the car then meet with a dmv stolen auto investigater .show him all your records and tell him you would like to surender the title and vin but would like to apply for a new vin supplyed by you with a repro vin or just let them do a state issued version with the blessings of the dmv first .and always be straight up .you could do a history on the body numbers for stolen history before you stick your neck out to far, the body numbers will be incomplete on the shell i assume its an e body ,the dmv can find the rest . good luck and deal straight up .

    So is the dash vin diff from the cowl/rad support vin? Does the title match the dash or the car??  Lots of dashes get swapped out.  :dunno: Just wanna make sure I understand your question...

    It sounds like the dash vin was swapped out and is titled  to that and the body numbers do not match.The PO may or may not have known about the non-matching numbers so you may need to go back a few more owners but even then it may be hard to prove who did it.I`d first try to check to see if the body numbers come up as stolen and then find out how your state DMV handles missing vin numbers.
