Inside Hood Release (Electronic)
« on: April 10, 2009 - 11:20:12 PM »
I used Goody's tip to use an 80's 5th Avenue trunk latch as a hood latch.  The only thing was, I couldn't figure out how I wanted to activate the release.  Here's what I did...

Grabbed a junkyard cable-activated hood release.
Cut of the cable and ground off the crimp area.  Drilled and tapped the end of with a 6-32 thread.
Cut off the back bracing on the housing and sanded flat.
Mounted a momentary pushbutton in the housing to trip the latch.
Fabbed a tab to mount to the end of the cable handle and "bump" the momentary switch when pulled.
Assembled with a small spring to give it the right "feel" when pulled.

Still need to paint the housing, but it looks good so far...

That is a really cool idea. I put one from a 75 Cordoba in my 70 'Cuda but it was just a mechanical remote release. I loved the security of it though.

Very creative,  I wonder if you have an alternate mechanical back up just incase you have an electrical fire under the hood and need to get it opened quickly.

Is that the positive thought for the day?  You can open the hood mechanically by inserting a screwdriver into the slot used by the original key lock tab.

Yep  :2thumbs: Stubby driver can get snuck up there to pop it. My trunk latch, of course i'd have to reach in from the back seat. (i dont leave the top bolted down for that)

I was just thinking of melting grills from flames and burning hands. It's kinda hard to get a crew driver up in there with a steady hand and the hood on fire being hot.   Just me thinking out loud is all. I never have seen an electric hood latch and was wondering if it had been thought through was all

It is a good point Alan, the reasoning behind me doing mine is to keep random people from popping my hood (outside only latch). However i would think an "emergency" cable could be thought of, and may be at some point. Unless you have a complete electrical failure, or something grenades hard enough to take out that latch, then in theory it should still work just fine. Unless you have bad enough luck that the solenoid craps out at the same time!  :faint:

I was wondering if you could post a photo of the installation under the hood.  I've hooked up the electric trunk latch for my trunk, but how did you install it for the hood?

Thanks,
Chris
