I've used multiple low cost products to treat rust depending on location & severity.
For heavy rust Permatex has brush on product that glazes over black (like Por 15), I used this years ago on my golf cart battery box & I know it works & will hold up.
For hard to reach places Permatex has an aerosol spray that does the same. Both are available at many auto parts stores.
To just remove light rust on small parts Evap-O-Rust in a small container works great & can be reused, the only local source i have is Auto Zone.
For the light to moderate surface rust on large panels I used Right Stuff I found at the local Advance Auto Parts.. It can be wiped or sprayed, has a acid action that eats the sand particles & converts to gray zinc which can be primed on or sanded down...Went back for more & they did not have but did have a similar product from Deep Purple called De-Ruster which I have yet to try.

HOW SKYCO OSPHO WORKS

When applied to rusted surfaces, it resists/retards rust in chemical change on drying to a tough, hard surface ready for priming. A paint job will last longer after an application of OSPHO because subsequent paint coating securely attaches itself so that moisture and oxygen normally do not attack the metal. OSPHO is water-thin, can cover a larger area than paint, and goes on easily. It is equally effective for exterior and interior work alike. SKYCO OSPHO: a balanced formula of Phosphoric, Dichromate, Wetting Agents and Extenders . . . compounded exclusively by the Skybryte Company since 1947 ... recommended by paint manufacturers.

Here guys dip rusted parts in citron acid/water 10% mixture. Leave the part in mixture overnight, if not clean let it bath little longer. Heat speeds reagtion up.
Wash the acid away with much water and blow dry with airgun. Paint straight away.

If you have a part that you cant dip, you can shop some wallpaper powder and when mixing acid add powder to it. It turns out sticky lime what you can add to your part with a paint brush.

You can get citron acid from hardware/agri shop, pigs need it for some reason.
That acid is enviroment friendly too, so no worries with that.

I remember KapteeniKosmos had some pictures about using CA, in here c-c.com.

Myself Im dipping my doors, only way to get all rust out inside the door.

I use DX579 metal prep mixed with water. works amazing.Toxic for sure, but the parts come out clean as you ever seen.
I also use the SEM Rust-mort with really positive results.

please let me know what you think.
