seal for front and rear of intake?
« on: July 17, 2009 - 08:52:30 AM »
I am sitting here thinking about doing the manifold gasket on my 318 (edlebrock performer intake, 360 J heads).....I ordered new intake gaskets from edelbrock.....but not usre if it will include the gaskets at the front and back of the manifold as well?  Seems I have what looks to be some sort of foam gasket at those locations.....????

Every intake gasket I've bought had the front & rear foam.....Word is to use plenty of RTV silicone sealant on them, especially in the corners.

Ultra copper work ok?

Also, should I use some of it on the gaskets themselves?

on mine i left out the gasket entirely, put down a sizable bead say 1/4"+, front and back,  and set the manifold into it. I also put the same high temp sealer on the gaskets both sides....no leaks as yet and i've got 1000+ miles on it.

The "right stuff' idea is cool....would have to use the "minimal expanding" stuff right?  I guess it is just an oiul seal there, not vacuum....

The instructions for the edelbrock gaskets (which do not come with foams) says to use RTV unless the manifold instructions say different....of course I dont HAVE instructions......LOL......

My Performer RPM manifold instructions as are most aftermarket manifold manufacturers were very specific about NOT using the end seals, they like to blow out under high load when crankcase pressure can rise.  The Right Stuff only comes in two kinds, a regular kind (similar to Ultra Black) and one for "Imports" (more like Ultra Grey.)  Both work just awesome, but any other good RTV will also suffice.  Usually need a good 1/2" bead to do the job, don't forget to overlap on the actual intake gaskets or you'll have leaks in the corners.

Intake is on hold though till I figure out why the car just quits..... (another thread)  :banghead:

like was previously mentioned, never use the end peices, i wonder why they even include em?

right stuff seems like overkill, that stuff gets right messy fast!!   :smilielol:
