Seat foam install questions
« on: July 18, 2009 - 12:18:24 PM »
I'm in the process of putting new foam and covers onto the seats in the Cuda and am confused about some of the instructions for the foam.  I've done Legendary seat covers over existing foam a couple of times before, but this is my first attempt at replacing the foam.  I thought it would be pretty straight-forward, but they include some muslin to be cut and glued onto the foam.  Their instructions are a bit ambiguous and the associated pictures are an inch by an inch and a half.
They want me to cut 16 pieces of cloth 6" X 14", presumably for eight on each seat set (although the piece of muslin supplied wasn't quite big enough to allow for that many pieces). Here's where the instructions lose me:
Glue 6X14 strip to the rear of the front seat bottom on the top side.
Glue 6X14 strips to other sides of the front seat bottom
Glue 6X14 strips to the four sides of the front seat top
Are these all glued down, wrinkles and all, to the bolster areas around the exterior of the foam?
The pictures seem to show the cloth strips wrapped over the bottom edges of the foam (so some of the muslin is on the inside of the foam)
In the middle of this cry for help I found the Legendary instructions on the web:
http://www.legendaryautointeriors.com/files/CDP%20Molded%20Foam%20Guide.pdf
Figure 9, regarding the strips on the seat top, has me totally confused.
So if anyone out there has done this and could clear some of this up, I would really appreciate it.

If I remember right it glues to the sides pulls down and hog rings to the underside of the seat same as the upholstery. Pete

Basically, the fabric covers each "square edge" on your foam, much like the original. Depending on your seat pattern, you may have to "modify" the foam for those fabric tabs on the back side of your covers.

They get coat hanger like rods slid through them, and then you pull it tight through creases in the foam and hog ring it to the frame work and spring supports.

Thanks to both of you.
Actually the original foam didn't have any fabric glued to it, but in a few places like the bottom of the seat back, the foam was gathered up and hog-ringed  to the frame.  Most of the original foam came right off once all the upholstery hog-rings were removed.  So it sounds like, you're saying that the muslin is wrapped around the bottom and back edges of the foam to reinforce the foam edges so you can hog-ring them to the frame. Thanks. It does help.  I can see the fabric strips wrapping around the edges.  Our foam doesn't have any of that.
