    I read some where that they came out with a 440 later in that year, it did 0 - 60 in something like 5.5 sec.  and had a 14 sec quarter mile. pretty inpressive. Wasn't there a 340 motor also optioned on the cuda model in 69?

    From what I have read and seen, you could also get a 340 in the Formula S package... but it wasn't as chosen as the 383 or 440 for obvious reasons... although that 340 is one killer engine!!

    The formula S came out in 65 with a 235hp 273 4bbl same for 66, 67 came with 273 4bbl or 383, 68 came standard with 340, 383 option, 69 340 standard, 383 option 440 limited option.

    The 273 has a tiny cam  235hp cam  .415/.425  248/248

    I wonder how much power a 273 would make with 340 heads, intake, cam, carb and exhaust ???????

    Looking at the standard features of the 273 64-67 Ma Mopars best parts went into these babys    

    Forged cranks went in
    64-67       273's
    67            318's
    68-71       340's

    273 pistons   lightest small block  
    64-67        2bbl   530grams  
    65-67        4bbl   569grams
    68-69                 547grams

    360                     584grams
    318                     592-594grams
    340                     720grams     :(

    Adjustable rockers came on
    64-67        273's
    70             340 T/A motors

    Forged vibration dampers
    64-69       273's
    67            318's
    68-72       340's    some 72's were not

    Mech Cams
    64-67       273's
    no             340's

    Another thought    t/a motors cam  
    hyd.    .430/.444    268/276
    same as 70 340 non t/a cam, but not the largest small block cam in 68 340 manual cars had a  .444/.453   276/284  

    Some in theory  the 273 and 340 have the same parts   rods, crank  travel, journal size, dampers, rockers.  Adjustable not roller tips but hey you could run a Mech. Cam.....
    If 1 had a junk 340 (bad crank or 72 or 73)(72-73 do not have forged cranks, there not junk) a 273 donor engine would supply a lot of good parts.....  273's are cheap ;D

    To LB,  For disc brakes for the A body Cuda, all you need is a 73 Up Dart Or Valiant V8 car.  Use the upper control arm, entire spindle/hub assembly, caliper & hose.  The only disadvantage is you will also pick up the 4 1/2 in bolt circle for the wheels.  If you do this, you can use the rear axle from the same later A body & that way you also get 10" rear drums.  You might also get the 8.25 gear too.  The 69 probably has a 7.25 & 9' drums.  I did this same swap on my 65 Cuda. The rear was from a 74 Valiant & the Discs from a 73 Dart.  The reason you use the upper control arms is the disc brake cars have a different upper ball joint.  If you didnt already have the small bolt pattern rallies, then there is no disadvantage.  I have 72 Cuda 14x6 rallies on my 65.  Ovmf

    Called Heavy Metal Auto Wreckers, the yard in this post. They said that they no longer had the 71 cuda, however they did have some other e-body parts cars.

    Someone came a long last summer and bought the shell. There has been several Challengers going as well. I'm glad I got my parts when I did.
    If your into 71 -74 Chargers and A-bodies, he has several complete cars. Also some good parts for late 60's B-body.

    the Cuda was a seperate model in 69 seperate from formula S cars. You can tell the Cuda models by the blacked out rockers with Cud callout on the fenders and the dual hood scoops at the back of the hood. These were one year only cars. Probably less than 400 made.
