OIL LEAKS SEARCH

Well, if you know it's coming from somewhere above the oil pan and rear seal, but below the heads and sender... does it matter which plug is leaking?...lol. The engine or trans needs to come out and that's that. But I'd make damn sure it's from the back of the block first.

BTW I should probably admit at one point I pulled the trans, clutch ,and bell and replaced the cam bore cap thinkign the seeping was my leak. Then I found out it was the lower 1/2 of the rear main that I have put in the retainer backwards...

Well it does help that it has happend to you pro too. At this point I dont know if its leaking above the pan rail or rear seal ,so I plan on borrowing a scope to try and find out. If I can't tell or if the seal looks ok I will drop the trans. Its been in ther for 20yrs now so it must be time anyway plus the output seal and pan does leak a bit so... ofcourse I will order new engine oilpan gaskets and rear seal just in case since I live were I do. The only problem I forsee is trying to get the top half of the seal out...does it req. a special tool? And thanks guy's for all your patience with this.

If it's original you have to be very careful and it's goign to be a bear to get out. I bought the tools years ago... Ones a mechanical finger to pull the seal. The others are various things to get it unstuck from the block without going crazy. I've never been able to use them effectively. I do better with patience, a tiny screwdirver or two, and pliers.

No it's not original it's about a month old,from a Fel-pro gasket set. It only had those cheesy pipe cleaner side seals so that's where the leak maybe or I put it in wrong or too dry(I used teflon engine assbly lube) or not enough RTV. Some have said to just push the old out with the new?

Read this post . Went though the exact same problem in my case it was the stinking side seals on the seal cap (pipe cleaners).

Still not leaking since I fixed it with the old style . Is your motor a big block ? The racing guy told me of many other guys that had this problem . IF you can find the old style seals even used ones can be used over . He told me if you use used ones clean out the groves on the seal cover , put some sealer in there and the old type strips , Put it in a vice over night to set up (snug but not too tight) , next day coat the out side then put the motor back together .  OR if you find the old type strips in a cover leave them in clean them up , coat with sealer then put together (thats what I did) worked like a charm .
