Howling rear end
« on: July 21, 2009 - 10:35:30 PM »
The 3.55 gear set in my '72 Cuda has been howling (between 35-50mph) ever since I bought the used center section, and I've just put a little over 3K miles on it so far. I plan to replace the gears later this year once the cruising season is over but in the mean time I want to drive the car down to the Mopar show in St. Louis, which is a few hundred miles away. My question is will the rear end hold up for this distance or is the howling telling me that it will self-destruct at any time? I can deal with the noise for the rest of the Summer, but I don't want to get stranded if it goes.

I wouldn't chance it. Find another gear pot , any ratio till you rebuild yours? :2cents:

typically howling is a sign of a bad set up on the gears not a sign of iminent failure but it coul dbe an issue on a long haul

:iagree:  If it does it on either acceleration or coast and not all the time the pinion depth is wrong. I've seen some rears last years like that. If it does it constantly I'd park it and get it fixed.

by the way - I had the large gasket removed in my 8 3/4 and fixed the leak it with lots of silicone. However after that repair I can hear some noise whe accelerating @ 40 mph. Should my mechanic set the pinion depth one again after the swap from gasket to silicone?
There was no noise from the rear end before.

It is not going to effect any differential settings.
