Engine RPM"s at Idle
« on: July 26, 2009 - 06:38:35 PM »
Any one know what my idle should be off the top of your head (ball park) ? It is a 440 with a 780 street avenger carb , small cam ,and intake ? It was idling around 1300 but that seemed to fast . I now have it about 1000 which sounds better . :working:

Do you hav a Manual or Automatic box ? do you have a stall convertor if it is Auto ?
I would say around 750-RPM to 950-RPM, but if your happy with 1000-RPM that is cool :2thumbs:

yeah thats what the book says but no matter how I tuned the car it never liked it that low.  Even when the car came from the factory my Dad said it never idled well at the sticker range. He always kept it at 875ish-1000.

What kind of initial timing are you running?

Tom

I get my 422 SB with a decent cam and the same carb to idle easily at 750 in P but like to keep it around 850ish.

I  can idle the car lower and it still sounds smooth but somehow it sounds too slow . As for the timing I could have told you a year ago what it was but today I'm not sure without hooking up a light . I'll try 1000 for a while . Thanks guys . :ylsuper:
