BETTER REAR MAIN SEAL ?
« on: July 18, 2009 - 06:42:45 PM »
Does anybody make a better rear main seal kit than the new ones with two sticks of pipe cleaner? Looks like I,m leaking thre also. :swear:
Ok maybe I'm overthinking the problem but when I remove the inspection cover on the auto bellhousing there is engine oil running out of there but the flexplate and TQ are dry and clean! If the rear main is leaking shouldnt the oil be infront of not behind the flexplate? :clueless:

Thats just the cap seal. I usually just fill with permatex ultra. Make sure you fill the whole void. Did you rotate the seal 15-30 degrees off the centerline?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

You might be leaking out of a small freeze plug in the back of the block. You wouldn't neccessarily lose oil pressure since that is controled by the pipe plug in the oil galley just behind the freeze plug. nd sorry, thought you had replaced the rear main seal!

See your post about the oil leaks... I mention checking the bell area.. Sounds like the trans vent might be puking at high rpms.

Thanks Pete I'll check into that.72cudaman I was carefull about that frost plug but you never know. Wonderd about the oil pressure not dropping but guess you answerd that too. Was I soposed to rotate the main seal halves about 15-30 degrees? Everything I read said just keep it parallel to the main cap and bearings? :dunno:
Moper I'll check on the vent also but right know my oil dips turned into a full blown downpour of engine oil. :22yikes:

I just went through this same thing . Mine was the stinking seals on the side of the rear seal cap .Interesting thing ,I was talking to my engine guy today and I brought up the pipe cleaners and asked what the heck that was all about . He told me you have to wet them and the moisture is what drys the silicone not the air . Without them the silicone would skin over , not drying and soon as you start the motor the pressure would blow the oil right through .150 miles since I changed the seals on the sides of the caps and I have not lost a drop .With these cap seals this happens a lot . Try to find some of the old ones even if they are used . The guy I'm talking to knows what he is doing he just got done building a 1600 horse drag motor ($29000.00 worth)  :burnout:

Thanks Badjoey for the tips, I suspect the side seals too although as others say could be other reasons and may  still have to drop trans to fix those. I did soak the pipe cleanrs in water but still no gaurantee on my workmanship! :roflsmiley: Think I will post a pick of how I had the seal in there, still couldv'e put it backwards, it all sounds simple enough but of course you cant fix stupid! :misbehaving:

The minute I read oil on the headers where all the pipes come together I had a flash back . Long as I drove at low speeds it wouldn't be to bad but go over 3500 rpm's and look out , the passenger area would fill with smoke and a big trail of smoke behind me . I bought a $50.00 fire extinguisher just in case . That would have been one heck of a fire . My ceramic headers are stained for life . The oil was coming out and getting on the headers between the dust cover and the bell housing . Mostly on the pass side . I went as far as trying form a gasket between the cover and bell hoping the oil would leak out of the hole in the bottom and the leak would stop as the engine broke in . :roflsmiley: Wrong . 5 hours and 2 days and all is well if I knew how easy it was I would have fixed weeks before I did . Wish I could post pitchers I'd show you what the old cap looked like when I took it out . :crying: IF you can get the old type side cap seals DO IT . :worshippy

PS I did change the seal while it was apart (just in case) although it still looked knew .
