Solder/welding aluminum
« on: July 06, 2014 - 04:00:31 PM »
Check this out, I just saw a live demo of it, it's a new material that the Germans developed, you can solder aluminum with it, fix broken threads etc. I was very impressed with the demo, he even fixed a big 1/4" hole in aluminum pretty easy. I bought a piece of the material so I can test it, I also got a piece that they tested on and the soldering/weld is very strong.

Old topic I started, but I tested this myself today, first I practiced on a piece of scrap aluminum, then I soldered a screw hole in my rare expensive SE tailpanel. It worked! Looks pretty solid, I filed some afterwards. Now I just need to sand it and polish the area. And fix some other small dents in it. But this hole has been bothering me since 2013.

Here is a good guide to the rest of the work:

Cool !  I see this stuff being demonstrated  at local car shows. I always wonder how well it worked.  :2thumbs:

I hope it will polish as well as the surrounding area also, so I don't get a ring there.
This is the test I did, filed it down and from what I can see it looks the same as the alu.
Have a broken fastener lip on the backside of my SE tailpanel also, gonna try to solder on a piece there
if I can find a thin piece of alu.

Wonder how well this would work on thin aluminum tubing
