I have 18* on initial on mine, although I had to limit the total mechanical advance to keep it at 38*. I ran mine with as much as 22* initial, and I'm pretty sure I'm fairly stock for a cam. I dialed it back a little to get the total advance in better.

I am going to run without the vac advance for a time and see what happens......Seems to run fine so far without it on.

I forgot to check to see what the mechanical timing is adding.....but like I said, no pinging or anything that I could pick up.....

If I could get the lower end to be better I would be happy enough. The idle is still very annoying.........I will probably still try replacing the intake gasket but want to see if what I have done up to now holds.  I could be opening up a can of worms by pulling the intake.

I've run mine without the vacuum advance for months, it just puts it too far advanced with that much initial timing. I haven't had any issues without it, and the 18* initial and 38* total mechanical advance. If you're running a stock distributor, unless you've modified it, you'll probably end up with more than 38* total advance with 18* initial.

What kind of dist do you run?

Too much advance would equal pinging right?  Didnt seem to have any.

It is a stock dist....

I have a Pertronix billet distributor on mine now. Works great! It also comes with limiters to adjust how much mechanical advance you get, pretty easy to do and you can dial in exactly how much mechanical advance you want. You can do the same with a stocker, it just requires a little more work (changing the size of the slots in the advance mechanism).

But if you aren't getting any pinging or stumbling when you're on the throttle then you should be fine anyway.

Was running pretty good until I ran into that same "dying" issue!   :banghead:  I think my timing is ok for now as is.

Have you rechecked the idle vacuum with the 18 degree initial advance?  It should be a little higher now.  Do you have any idea what cam is in the engine?

Yeah, the idle in park vaccum is higher, at about 7"hg.....it was at like 5 before.

No idea what cam, but at this point pretty I am assuming it does have one.

Have driven the car a couple times now, locally, just for short trips, and while it still has a low lumpy idle etc no dying out....but again, I had the same thing happen before...couple rides no problems and then BLAMMO it would die.

So, just waiting to see.

I finally got to speak with the previous owner to the one I bought the car from and was hoping that HE would have some info on the motor...no such luck.  He bought the car that had my motor in it from a used car lot and said he would try to dig up the address/phone for that but I am not holding my breath.  Would love to know exactly what's in it...that would sure go a long way in figuring stuff out...LOL   :banghead:

Did a car cruise-in last night and that was great....nice summer evening, lots of cool cars, good music, etc.  :)

Are you sure your carb is not flooding?  It almost sounds like that sort of problem...

Thats what I thought was happening, so I tweaked the floats lower...to where I think its a bit lower than spec.

Still stalled out in my garage.

Now, it didnt do it lately.....could be a heat related thing , I have been told.....so looking into putting a 16lb rad cap on (9lb currently)...thinking maybe that will help keep the temps down....though I though that teh cap only regulated the temp at which the water boils.....I may als ocheck to see what thermostat I have in there....my gauge reads low (stock) and the aftermarket reads at 180 at its hottest (if its accurate).....

Stick a thermometer in the radiator with the cap off and it running, a cap won't make a temp. difference I dont think. It will only blow off when too much pressure is present...   :dunno:

The cap does actually change the temperature at which the coolant in it boils. Boiling temperature is dependent on pressure, so even a 7 or 8 lb increase in pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant. The higher the pressure outside the liquid the harder it is for the gas present inside the liquid to escape.

You'd also make a mess, since the coolant expands as it gets hotter, which is where the pressure comes from in the first place. Without the cap as the coolant got hotter it would overflow the radiator.

Ok, but I guess what I am asking is -- does the boiling actually cause any problems, like hot spots in the engine, etc, that would cause driveability issues?

I am weighing the risk to the benefit here......the risk being that my water pump, engine or heater core decides that 16lb is too high after being at 9 lbs......

I guess the right way to do it would be to try it....as they say, nothing ventured nothing gained....then again they also say If it aint broken, dont fix it....LOL

SO, I guess the REAL question here is --- is it broken by running a 9 lb-er?

Since they were designed to work at 16psi to begin with, my personal take is that if something let's go after the switch it was on its way out before regardless.  You should have no issues putting on the correct cap.

Well, I cant argue with that....

I should have thought to do this before putting in the carpet though....if the heater core lets go, mess city...LOL
