Pictures : Rebuilding this 8 3/4 - Rust & What to replace?
« on: August 25, 2009 - 06:14:13 PM »
I got this 8 3/4 Housing and Axles, they have more rust than I had hoped for, but I got them very cheap.
If I can get the guy to sandblast the inside of the housing, will that kill the seals at the end?

I'm also needing some help on the Axle, the one on the Right has something different, it has less rust. Is that an after market part/flange on there.
Given the rust seen inside the housing, would it be safe to assume I need new axle bearings and seals?
Are they easy to change?
Where's a good place to get this stuff?

Those flange pics (and the one on the right)  are correct.   Finding original bearings will be costly but worth it. Most places will tell you not in stock or not available anymore.

Doc differential in montana carries all that stuff.  he has complete axles ready to go too. And just think, if you would of spent some gas money, I had a rear I was giving you with all good pieces, just add gears.  I really hope you can get your 8 3/4 stuff together. You have wanted it for a few months now.  And changing the axle bearings is not easy, but not hard either. There is a specific way to do it.  NO TORCH

I redid an 8-3/4 in the late 90's.  I got everything from CarQuest.  I took the axles to the local Dodge dealer who had a press and they installed the bearings for me.  The housing should clean up just fine.  You need to replace the seals anyway so blasting isn't going to hurt anything.  Just take a long punch and a hammer and the axle seals will come right out.  If you want, you can install the "green" style bearings that eliminate the need for the endplay adjuster on the one axle.  That is up to you.  Setting the endplay is easy.  The "green" style bearings are a lot more money than the factory ones but are nessesary if you are running a spool.

Wow, prices have gone up.  In the late 90's I payed $100 for the green bearings and $40 for the stock ones through CarQuest.

If you're interested, I have a full set of rear axle bearings (cups and cones) with press collars and outer grease seals that I could sell you.  I decided to run the Green bearings, and I bought these before making that decision naturally.   :eek4:
