I scored a set of Dog Dish Hub Caps before I went on vacation for $5 each. They are original and had been sitting in a storage shed for 35 years. They where delivered while I was away, and I didn’t get a chance to work on them until today. So follow along as I show my efforts in making them nice enough to put on my car.
First here is what they looked like after I unpacked them. Notice that they have a medium grey color between the ribs. They are in decent shape, with just a few dents and scrapes on them. They where covered with 35 years of dust, the previous owner didn’t try to clean them up.
First I washed them with “Greased Lighting” Blast degreaser. As you can tell, in the side-by-side photos, only some of the dust and grime was removed by washing alone.
The next step was to wash them again with the Greased Lightning and “00” steel wool, which really cleaned them up. The steel wooled one is on the left.
After that, I broke out the small body hammer and pounded out all the dents and scratches.
Then I polished each one with Mothers “mag and Aluminum” polish. Know they are good enough for a driver.
