Rob's timing trick is this, remove all of the spark plugs, using a high speed starter like the new mini-starters, spin the engine and set the initial timing. Re-install the plugs and fire it up. (Hope I got that right Rob, correct me if I screwed it up)
That's it. You'll never have to touch the distributor trying to get it running if you set it first. Don't forget to prime the pump before dropping the distributor in either, because once it starts, you have to bring it up to 2000 to 2500 to break in the cam. Excessive slow cranking will wipe all of the cam break-in lube off.
