Trailer weights
« on: August 18, 2009 - 12:17:30 PM »
Approx. how much does an open trailer weigh? I was wondering if my 02 Dakota 2 wd 4.7 V8 5 speed would tow the 73 Cuda (340 4 spd.) on an open trailer. The truck has the towing pkg. and max. cooling pkg. The owners manual says I can tow 5450#.
Anyone tow with a similiar setup?

All depends on the material used to build the trailer, aluminum, steel. length, but on average I think you will be fine. I would guess anywhere from 800lbs to 1500lbs for most 14 to 20ft trailers.

Your Dak could tow it but will be at the upper end of its limits. You could do it for a short trip across town, but it would be a risky proposition for any extended length or anything involving big changes in elevation. Lets say 3800# Cuda, 1500# trailer, your at 5300#. Possible, but not ideal. I don't know the torque range of the 4.7, but it probably isnt the greatest for towing big loads like that.

make sure you set up for trailer brakes, I pull my 73 chally on a open trailer with my Ram 1500 4x4, squats the truck decent amount, so I would be concerned how much load the dakota can take

Average 21' open trailer is approx. 1,250 lbs. the Cuda with a small block is probably around 3,500 lbs.. plus extra stuff like tools/parts/etc. another 500lbs.
Your pushing your luck with the Dakota, Back in the 70's I towed with a '75 Dodge 1/2 ton 2wd pick-up w/a small block auto and that was pretty much the bear mininum.
If your staying local like 1 to 2 hr. trips it would not be too bad. If you have hills to deal with it could be a problem.
Made sure your truck & trailer brakes are in excellent shape....

So basically, if I decided to tow my stripped '70 Coronet on a Uhaul trailer over numerous mountain passes (12hr trip approx.) with a '93 Cherokee Country 4X4 with a H.O 4L....bad idea? Not even considering snow ;D

That 4L will pull it just fine its the stopping part of the trip on the downhill side of the mountain  that could get interesting.

Where is Camjam
he towed his chall with a Dakota , he made it out here but on the way back home it caught him off guard & the Chall ended up on it`s roof as well as the Dak, use a real truck, Camjam replaced the Dak with a Cummins
