water base paints
« on: August 19, 2009 - 08:32:37 PM »
Hey anybody try the new water based paints yet? I am gaining on my project and want to try and get my door jambs, trunk area, interior and engine bay area painted up before cool weather comes a calling. so i am in the process of trying to pick a color and have read a little bit about these water based paints. For a do it yourself kind of guy like me, i think they will be fine, but i want to hear from you guys out there that have used them.

I have tried them, but I prefer the good ol' fashioned high VOC stuff!!  Nothin' like good ol Volatile Organic Compounds to get you goin' in the morning.

Personally, when I spend 200+ hours on prepwork on a project car, I don't want to risk laying down a paint job that may or may not hold up.  My experience with the water based stuff is that it tends to delam sooner than good old urethanes do.

I'd stick to old solvent based paint system, just because tree-huggers think every paint shop should switch, doesn't mean you have to,atleast not untill they make it illegal, :stirpot:

lots of new european cars are painted with waterbase .  I hate the extreme orange peel that comes with it...

Orange peel usually comes from one heavier coat, again a cheap way of applying paint.   :money:

A friend owns a body shop and he uses virtually all water base now. No orange peel - in fact he says that these new paints can make a professional out of an amateur painter. His booth and system cost him $80,000 so he has the best in computer paint matching as well and can match water base to other types of paint. The choice is still there for which paint you use but we will be mandated into water base at the end of 2010.

340six - my friend who owns the bodyshop lives in BC Canada. The province wide bodyrepair association had an info session on water based paints about a year ago. There they were told that the mandates will start first in the US (California I believe - what else) then filter through the US 49 others then Canada. It is to do with paint fume emissions during application and the unfriendly chemicals used to make lacquer and base paints. End of 2010 is supposed to be it for everyone. I purchased a quart of matching FY3 for mine, on his advice, so that I can fix the self induced scratch and future others. (scratch avoiding tip - don't undo the front chain on your trailered car until you have finished moving the trailer, car moved off the trailer on to the rear chassis rails and dinged my new quarter in the process  :faint:) I was lucky and we'll fix it and move on.
