Repairing cracks in 71 Challenger grill
« on: September 30, 2009 - 07:05:01 AM »
What is the best to use to repair a few cracks and one missing tab on a 71 Challenger? I figured I could use regular epoxy for the cracks but I have part of a tab missing where the metal rivets to the grill and I would like to repair that although its just one rivet in the middle and not a have to. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get it figured out?

Is the grill ABS plastic?  IF it is, there is a great way to fix it that I read on Moparts.

First you need to find another piece of junk ABS to use.  Next, you use a knife to cut some slivers of ABS from the junk piece.  Put them in a jar with some Asitone and they will melt into a gell.

Open up the cracks in your grill and taper the edges so you can get plenty of new plastic into the crack.  Once that's done, smear the melted ABS gell onto the crack and let it dry.  Once it has dried, you can sand the area and finish it off.

Great suggestion, Burdar! Wish I had thought of that when doing my grille. I used a plastic welder here locally who did a fantastic job for cheap. Let me know if you need his contact info.

Thanks for the tips guys. I use acitone (which is more commonly known as fingernail polish remover) for rhodium plating jewelry so I have easy access to it. I might do a test with the abs gel.
