Want to Polish Exterior Moldings...Need to know the material
« on: August 31, 2009 - 09:23:50 AM »
I want to polish the exterior moldings on my 70 Cuda.  Between the front and rear windshield moldings, the side window drip molding on the edge of the roof, and piece below the front windshield where the wipers rest....which are stainless, which are aluminum, and which are chrome?

Thanks 340SIX....I was pretty sure the drip molding was stainless.  Mainly need to know whether the the front and rear windshield trim is also stainless or chrome....also the piece under the front windshield that the wipers rest on.

Front and rear glass trim is SS.
I polished all my SS trim.  Time consuming and dirty, but possible.
I started by straightening and banging out any small dents.  Then sanding scratches with wet sandpaper.  I had to go to 400 to get rid of some scratches, then progress through to 2000.  After that, used the polishing wheels with the 3 compounds from Eastwood.  I redid each piece about 2 or 3 times until it looked decent (in my opinion).

Are there any anodised aluminium pieces on a Cuda like there are on a Challenger?  I assume the rear tail trim(if your Cuda has them) is anodised.

You can't polish the anodised pieces.  It will accually dull the finish.  If you don't want to spend the money on re-anodising(it's expensive) I have heard that you can strip the anodising off by using oven cleaner.  Once the anodising is removed, you can polish the aluminium.

Anodized pieces on my '71 Cuda included the "spears" below the bottom of the doors and the trim on top of the doors.  Tail panel trim was SS.
