Classic Car Insurance
« on: May 24, 2005 - 11:28:45 AM »
Hello and good afternoon. Can anyone tell me where a good cheap place is to get classic car auto insurance. I tried one place and they said I had to have had a license for 10 years or more. I've had mine for 7 years going on 8 years now. I'm looking to get cheap insurance since I will be driving the car only 3100 miles a year ato most. I am a 24 year old guy with a clean driving record. If you guys know where would be a good place to get insurance please let me know. Thank you.

I use Hagerty Insurance.  I've had them for a couple of years and have been pretty happy with them.  Here is the link to their website:

http://www.hagerty.com/

You might want to check in with them.  If I remeber right you can get quotes online at their website.  Good Luck.

Some of this would depend on how you register your car too I believe.

For example:
I live in Ohio and my car is plated as a "historical" vehicle. This means she sees very limited duty, but.... I have the car insured for the value I choose ( within reason, you have to proove if it's worth say a million ) through State Farm with my daily drivers and the insurance is VERY reasonable ( due to the limited driving duties ).
I would stand behind my agent because afterall he insures the "collector" vehicles not only for myself but my brother and my uncles.

I hope this sheds some light.

Shop, shop, shop.  Companies that provide a good deal for one person sometimes are too high for someone else.
First check with your regular insurance agent.  They may have something to fit your needs.

Here are some suggestions:

You can also try JC Taylor. I represent JC Taylor, American Collectors, and Hagerty. All 3 have a good affordable program. But check with your agent they might represent one of these companies too. That way you have someone helping you if there is any problems. Make sure what ever you do you get an agrred amount policy.

04lbram,
Any single male under the age of 25 is $crewed when it comes to car insurance.  :P I don't know if you are single or not, but that figures in here even for collector cars. I don't know how much you are insuring for, but anything over $300-$400 would make me suspicious.

Thanks guys and as for the insurance I'm hoping no more than $200 a year. Besides that to give you an idea of what I pay for my truck/renter's insurance. I pay $130 a month for full coverage on my 2004 Dodge Ram 4x4 and for renter's insurance combined through USAA. Well, take care everyone and have a great evening.

I live in Ohio and my car is plated as a "historical" vehicle.

I did the same thing and left the car under my fathers name, so I only pay 132.00 a year and I'm allowed to drive it up to 3,000 miles. It doesnt sound like a lot of miles, but at 10 MPG, thats 300 gallons of gas and at well over 2 bucks a gallon, thats over 600 dollars in gas.....I dont think I can really afford to drive anymore than 3,000 miles a year. BTW, you will probably have to have your car appraised by a professional before the insurance company will cover you.

Another area to check is the "usage" clause. Some classic car insurance won't have a restriction on miliage but do have a restricted use clause. For instance you can drive it cross country to a car show, but you can't take it down the block to buy a loaf of bread.  :dontknow:
