Mopar performance clutch
« on: August 26, 2009 - 11:46:58 AM »
I see a thread or two about clutch recommendations. I don't want to hi jack those threads so I started a new one.
I have a '73 'Cuda 340. My buddy was supposed to install my new Passon trans. to replace the worn out 4 speed. He drove it and didn't like the way the clutch felt. I don't like it either. It is a diaphragm clutch. I have no experience with diaphragm clutches. He said that the fingers are at different heights. Someone must have tightened it down wrong. They also left the overcenter spring on. That is messing the clutch feel up also.
Anyway to make a long story short. I decided to change the clutch and pressure plate. This car is driven a lot by my wife. My concern is the clutch pedal will be too heavy for her. I want to go back to a Borg and Beck style clutch. I am considering the Mopar Performance #s P4529140 and P4529136. They are 10 1/2" 2500# pressure.
Does anyone have any experience with these clutches? Am I correct that the clutch I need is 10 1/2"?
Is 2500# more than a stock clutch? What is the rating for a stock clutch?

I have an opinion , contact McLeod , I would use a B&B / Long style clutch , only McLeod makes them
I have ad problems with the MP clutches in the past , you will need to re-install the overcenter spring
McLEod has different weigth clutch pressures to hold the power you are making without excessive pedal pressure

CP,
Why a Borg and Beck/Long instead of a Borg & Beck? Does the B&B/L have a lighter pedal pressure than the B&B? The MP clutch has a static pressure of 2500#. Is that what I should order if I buy McLeod?
I just read on the McLeod web site that they are a supplier to Mopar Performance. I didn't know that. I wonder if they supply all the MP clutches.

The B&B / Long style is probably the best design for the clutch , it has lighter pedal pressure & release faster for high RPM shifting

CP,
I am curious as to what kind of problems you have had with the MP clutches.
We are not racing or beating on the car. We mostly just cruise and maybe take a short blast with it. We won't be drag racing it. Do you still recommend the B&B/Long or is a B&B OK for this application? Is a B&B/Long a bolt in replacement?
I am asking because I have no experience with B&B/Long type of clutch. I have driven cars with B&B clutches quite a bit.

He means get a Borg and Beck OR a Long style preesure plate. They are similar in design with the 3 fingers in the pressure plate.

I ordered a McLeod from Passon. I should have it Tuesday!
Jamie at Passon always hooks me up.

This is incorrect , McLoed Only makes a combination Borg & beck hat with Long style fingers so it is a BB/Long plate , I use them in everything
I ordered a couple of bad clutches from Mopar performance about 3 years ago , they had a run of bad ones , I believe they were supplied by Hays , I can`t remember what the problems was exactly but I stayed away

Thanks Neil,

I was mistaken about the combo B&B/Long.

I do have a Mcloed roller-assist, Borg&Beck Scalloped pressure plate with the wide fingers that I bought from them years ago.

CP,
What do the Long levers on the B&B pressure plate do versus the B&B levers? I am curious as to what the advantage of using the Long levers are.

I went with a McLoed 360153 PP & 260121 Clutch.  It's the 10.95" instead of 10.50" and will drop-in w/o modifications needed, so I'm told.

longer levers = lighter pedal pressure
