Vacuum advance canister has hole?

Is it normal for the canister to have a hole in it? My hole is on the top; on the distributor side. If so, what's it's purpose?

yes it is an air bleed on the other side of the diaphragm , the outer side does all the work

yup... you have to have atmosphereic pressure behind that side of the diaphram for it to function.
