Axle Housing Seals??? (Pictures)
« on: August 31, 2009 - 09:26:11 PM »
Here's a few pics of the seals that came out of the Rear Axle Housing. I would guess that these are the seals that stop the Diff Oil from making it's way to the Rear Axle Bearings.
Where can I buy new ones?
The four Gaskets in the picture where on the end on the Axle Housing, there were two on each side, is than correct? Where can I buy them?
Last, that big piece of steel that was bolted on the Diff (on the left in the picture), what is it's purpose?

The pinion snubber restricts the axle from rotating too much on hard acceleration. It's part of the reason you don't use traction bars on chryslers.

Try your local dealer. I just ordered axle seals from my local Dodge dealer. Said I'll have them in two days.

Dodge parts counter just called today to tell me he can't get them anymore. Said he got one notice that they were shipped, and then another to say "no longer serviced"

inner seals are available, as well as the foam and steel gaskets. LOOKING AT 54.00 + usps if you cant find them locally. the steel gasket should not be doubled up,
that price is for 2 inner seales,2 foam gaskets, 2 steel gaskets.

If you don't want to wait, you can get everything locally, worst case is they take a day to get it from warehouse.

Inner axle seals and outer axle seals? I just took my axle shafts out and only found a nearly non-existent foam seal gasket, an axle housing to backing plate steel gasket and an axle shaft seal within the tube. What is the outer axle seal?

the outer seal is installed before the brg on the axle & you have to remove/ distroy the brg to relace it , it only keeps the dirt out iof the axle brg grease so it is rarely changed out unless the brg needs to be replaced anyway
