Is my tranny a goner
« on: September 10, 2009 - 08:41:07 PM »
Well all summer my little 904 trans with a manual valve body was slow to engage and after 1 min would not move from a dead stop in any gear until about 2000 rpms. However after 3 to 5 mins trans would work great all day long. I did change the oil and filter when the problem forst started with no change.

Well now for the last few weeks it would slip in reverse when only when hot, believe that is a low band adjustment but I never pulled the pan off.

Today thou it slip in 3 gear at WOT, back off and tried again, would not hold. Can drive part throttle fine in 3 rd gear, just can not hold full power.

I think its DOA, no band adjustments or valve body work will repair it, needs a full overhaul / right  ???

318 block, 360 MP "308" heads with 2.02 intakes, a custom 224 @ .050 cam, headers...dual quads, lol and daily 6500 rpms shifts. Car weight about 3700 lbs and 3.91 gears in back.

Rebuild the 904 (with 5 plate clutches and manual valve body) or move up to the 727 trans? (which means shorten the drive shaft and other minor mods)

I would move up to the 727,   :2cents:  they are a lot stronger
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

If I have a choice to rebuild a 904 or a 727 I always pick a 727. They cost the same to rebuild and you have alot stronger trans.

Guess the 904 is staying in cause my old tranny shop were the brother took over said cause I had it done before and other cars there, it be $600 max to redo it "right" maybe $500 depending on how far its gone.

Cash is tight and last time did last 5 years I believe.

But if money wasn't an issue...well I would supercharge that motor too then, he he.
