Need info on heads for my 340
« on: September 06, 2009 - 12:57:27 AM »
I have a 72 challenger 340 with .030 over aluminum pistons, block has been decked (pistons stick up about .023) and I'm being told running close to 10 to 1 compression, Street Avenger 650 carb, Eldelbrock RPM performer intake, comp cam with intake 224 exhaust 230 duration .050 lift.  All this with stock 360 heads.  I'd like to upgrade the heads, can anyone recomend something for me.  I want this to be a daily driver that runs on pump gas.

How about cost if I just upgrade my heads?  I have set of Titanium valves that I got when I purchased the car I'd like to use them if I can.

All I can say is that I run Edelbrock Performer heads that have been ported. I know there are better heads out there but if you look at my signature I think you will see they work pretty well. Plus they are a no brainer as far as install unlike some others out there. :2thumbs:

just be careful how much you spend if you still go with the iron heads for your upgrade.
i see it at work a lot where guys end up spending as much fixing up iron heads as they would have to go and buy some new alumnum heads, espicially if it is not a numbers match car just a driver.
be careful, espicially if you are going to port the iron heads, they end up costing as much or more than new alumnum heads, and flow less than the alumnum flow right from the box new.

What do want out of them, and what do you have to spend on the job?

440mike is right on the money IMO.
A recent quote I read:  there is no reason to run 30 year old iron heads unless the class your racing requires them.  OR you want numbers matching.
Plus your car will handle/corner better with 75 pounds removed from the front end (2 heads and intake manifold).   :2cents:

 :iagree:
unless the Alum heads offer now power gain over a ported set of say 308 heads that picked up 41 RWHP over X heads
