A wheel decision....
« on: September 06, 2009 - 08:20:49 AM »
ok, first here's the car:

My goal for the street look was 4 15x8 steelies and to run the dog dish caps with 255/60 rubber all around...  Unfortunately 15x8 steelies when you come across them, aren't cheap...  I liked this look because the car is a factory dog dish car, and would be a much more agressive "factory" look.
But lately I've got a few options and need help deciding where to go...
I've been offered a pair of 15x8 steelies that need to be blasted and painted, and would need to find another pair (unlikely considering the budget) so I'd settle for 15x7s in the front... still dog dishes, 255/60 in back, 235/60 in front.
OR
15x8 Super Coupe rims, with centers (same money as those 15x8 steelies) and 255/60s all around.
Finally,

Cragar Silver D Window wheels, 17x8 all around, 245/45 rubber...
I was also going to use these as "track" wheels (17x9 out back, have the tires already...)

All the options cost me about the same money... and the 14x5.5s with white walls and 205/70s are really wearing thin on me...

I like the Super Coupe wheel option. They look good and are wider than stock Rallye wheels.

Are steelies really that expensive? I thought super coupe rims were an arm and a leg. plain steel rims are $25 at junkyards or $60 at Summit.

I've heard bad things about the weight of 17" steel Cragars. They are so heavy, you will feel the difference in accelerating and cornering.

Check here to see if there are any sizes you may be interested in. You might be able to score some 15x8 for $30-50 each. http://www.aeroracewheels.com/overstock_sale.html I picked up a set for my Challenger for under $150. They don't weigh any more than a set of aluminum wheels in the same size and look just different enough that I got comments on them before I parked my car.

Get the steel rims becaue those look like truck wheels.  If your patient, you could pick up a used set of mopar rallyes off a board member here and have a nice looking set of wheels for about the same money IMHO.

well, tomorrow I may be trading straight up my set of Torq Thrust 2s for 15x7 and 15x8 rallyes (with 71 centers ) and 235/255 rubber  :2thumbs:

Cash always talks... and not having to spend any (except some gas) always helps.

I need to go to 15" wheels to run the 11.75" rotors but I did really want period correct wheels for cruiz nights.  I still might get the 15x8 ramcharger wheels and just save them til I get another pair...

You know, there are some trucks/ramchargers that came with 16x5 steel wheels in 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Widend to 8" they allow dog dishes, huge brakes, and race quality rubber. They are still a bit heavy though.

for any racing purposes I'll find a set of 17x9 or stagger 17x8 and 17x9 rims...  and make sure they are a reasonably light weight, too...  Maybe somebody might sell a set of fikse cheap... lol

Looks good man. Do you have a drivers side headlight bezel? I might have an extra but it will not be perfect by any means. Let me know if you need it.

I have the pentatstar stamped 15 x 8 steelies on the rear with 275 tires and 15 x 7 stamped steelies on the front with 235 tires. You may have a rubbing problem with the 8"s on the front.

thanks!  I actually have a nice unpainted one.  That fender needs some major straightening anyways so I'm just holding off...

Yeah, there's not really any good selection of wide/short tires for the 15x8s in front.  I think I'll keep this for a while.  I did end up with a pair of 15 x 8 ramcharger steel rims... they are in storage now...
