440 Valve Cover Gasket
« on: September 14, 2009 - 08:26:21 PM »
Hey guys hoping someone can help... I have a 440 with Edelbrock Aluminum heads covered by the Mopar Performance Valve Covers and I can NOT get them to seal on the outside rear corner on either side. I have tried cork, rubber, resin center rubber coated, and I've cover them in RTV and just about everything else you can think of. Has anyone had this problem before and if so how did you fix it????

usually the cast valve covers on the un-milled Iron heads always leak , but on a milled head like the eddy they should not be a tough seal , the rubber coated fiber seem to work the best , I assume there are  no casting flaws or steps in the milled surface lifting the cover or gasket ?

Both parts look smooth I know the oil seems to puddle in that corner but with a rubber gasket I dont think that would matter do you?

I used the moroso silicone gaskets. Theyre $25 but they seal well. Do NOT overtighten, and torque them as evenly as possible.

The only thing I can suggest is make sure you have cleaned up all the oil from around the area on the heads where the gasket seals. I use rubbing alcohol. That way you can smear the RTV on your gasket, and it will seal with the aluminum. I also would give the RTV about 12 hours or so to harden before I would start the engine.

I know I am being a pain and I'm sorry for that but I always do a cross pattern when tightening I know my first set (cork) I over tightened and that caused the leak. I wipe down and scrap both the head and the valve cover and this last time I waited 3 days to start the engine and after two heat cycles they are dripping again. I will try and track down the moroso set and see if that helps. Thanks guys

Just checked summit for the moroso's, and they are now $36! I know I paid less than that. Check around.
Also, I thought they were silicone, but they say they are rubber over steel. Anyways, theyre reusable, and they worked for me with my stock steel covers.
