sanding at my new home

I'm hopefully going to close on my first house in a couple weeks and I plan on starting to do body work (I've never done any body work before) on my 73 chally in the walk-out basement garage. The basement is dry from what I can tell.

Can I just start sanding the old paint away and not worry about the bare metal or do I need to put some kind of primer on. I can only work on it ever couple of weeks so I'm worried about letting it sit in the nude. It's a 97% solid shell. I want to strip it this winter and fix the couple small spots. Maybe paint if I find the time.

Any tips would be great.

I would keep a rattle can of some primer handy to coat the bare metal.  You probably dont need a lot, just enough to keep moisture off the bare metal.  You are going to prime eventually anyhow.

Be sure to use an enamel primer. Water proof. Laquers aren't. It will be some time before it's in paint. DP 40 by PPG is excellent.
