excessive oil pressure
« on: September 12, 2009 - 09:48:53 PM »
Guys, I am at a loss. My oil pressure jumped UP today. I put a 5.9(360) magnum in my car a few years ago. The engine has maybe 40,000 miles. When installed, the engine had about 25-35psi on a hot idle, and would hit 55-60psi at increased speed. While tooling around today, I noticed my rally oil pressure gauge read higher than normal, and really would not drop much at hot idle. I looked at my underhood gauge, and saw about 50psi at idle and 70 psi at practically anything above idle. This tells me that my relief on the oil pump is working, but what could make the pressure jump? I changed the oil today, (10w30) thinking my oil filter could be the problem(it wasn't). I am thinking that something is clogged somewhere in the engine at the outlet of my oil pump, any ideas, or should I just run the damn thing till it drops????

Could be a sticking relief valve, but that pressure really isn't too high.  I don't think I'd be worried about that, now if it dropped considerably that would be a different story.

If you are concerned, you could drop the pan, yank the pump, and check for burrs and smooth operation of the valve in it's bore.
