wiper motor issues
« on: September 21, 2009 - 02:00:30 PM »
Question about a wiper issue.

I had to pull the switch out to remove the metal panel to install a new light switch. I cant get the wiper switch to work now.  I cant figure out why. Is the metal insert being used as a ground for the light, dimmer, and wiper switch? If so can, which wires are grounds and can i pull that wire away from the switch to a ground?

That metal panel that the switches are mounted to does need to be grounded to your dashframe for things to work. Is there a way you can run a wire from that panel to some screw either under or inside your dash?

Well, I am removing that metal backing plate entirely. Its the only way to get the new light switch in. mmm  Any idea how to ground all the switches without the backing plate? ie.e which wires need to goto ground?

Thanks.

Get some sheet aluminum about 0.025" thick, cut out a circle washer with a 1/4" x 1/4" tab off one side. Then drill a hole in the middle that matches the switch mount hole. Place it behind the switch panel and on the switch. The tab should be filed down to fit a female spade terminal. Run a ground wire from the end switch to the next switch and jumper through each switch by putting two wires under one female terminal crip. End at a good ground with a ring type terminal and screw. Voila

so what you are saying is that the switch itself is grounded, there is no specific ground wire.

I basically did that for the wiper switch and for the dimmer switch, for the light switch, I have a completely different type of headlight switch so I am concerned that there is no ground now.

I do not believe the wiper switch needs to be grounded to operate.  (panel dimmer does) Check that the Pink wire is getting 12v with ignition switch in the ON position.

Correction.... This does not show in the overall schematic but in the Service Manual it clearly shows & states the switch is grounded.

The wiper switch requires a dedicated ground

I experienced that without the correct grouning on the switch, the wiper motor does work but it's not able to return the wipers in the start position on the bottom of the windshield.

got the wiper switch all worked out. Looks like the panel wasnt grounding properly. I just ran another short wire to a better grounded location.
