Federal Pumps / Saginaw Pumps..which one to get

My pump is leaking and the one bracket is crack. I know it can be welded and repair but since I am open to running either pump on my SBM and they are both easy to find on Ebay with the right brackets, is any one better than the other.

I got a Saginaw pump now but like the look of the round Fed pumps and the brackets seem stronger to me.

Either will work fine  , Mopar just got cheap & started buying the GM / Saginaw pump in 71 both work & seal kits are available for both  :2cents:

There are actually variations of the pump most call the Federal. The main 2 most commonly seen is the TRW and the Federal. The back area is what you need to look at to help determine what kind it is. Earlier Mopars P/S pumps that look like a Federal will throw you off on it being the right one.

Keep in mind also to look at the shaft that the pulley goes onto. Some have a keyway and some don't. Keep your original pulley if you've already got one. 
Federals IIRC, are no key but just a pressed on pulley. 

Saginaws were more prevalent on small blocks than Federals. Easier to get parts for too.

Well I recall my pulley being a bit bent so I'm just thinking of ebaying for an complete unit, pump, brackets, pulley and the cap.

This one looks nice but ouch on the price....I just started to look and with ebay you need to look and wait or just overpay.

Yup that's a Federal for a Small block.
You'll need the cooler also if you are going for correct T/A / AAR P/S pump look.

No, not really...its for a mutt...an 78 Magnum (its cheaper, lol).

It thinks and looks under the hood like its 1967....I even got dual quads 500 carters on it now, works great all around.

Not sure if a cooler I would want with the header heat. Plus it be more than $23 for the hose (that is autozone price for the fed high pressure hose)

He said he take $120 plus $32 shipping...is it close to being a fair price. (I know the pump could leak but autozone shows a seal kit for it for $20)

The coolers mount onto the pump and if in good shape aren't cheap. I bought an NOS one on E bag and the bidding went crazy for it.

 It went over $300.

120 seems like a fair price. federals aren't that common.

I don't like Federal pumps at all. If you ever are in a quick turning situation the pump can't keep up. Now most of you might not drive that hard, but to me it shows thier weakness. I know an original AAR owner that autocrossed he AAR since almost new. He always had a problem with the power steering not keeping up and burning up pump. He switched to a saginaw and never had problems after.

I've never had a Saginaw pump go bad, but I've had two Federals go out.

For the price of that Federal unit, I would stay with the saginaw. I just bought one on ebay with brackets and pulley for $5 that came off a 73 Challenger, to complete a 2nd power steering setup for a small block mopar. It may not have been as nice appearance wise as the one you listed, but for some elbow grease and a $5 can of paint, it'll look brand new.

I do drive hard, not always but the Duke boy's would be proud of me sometimes, ha ha.

No brackets-that aren't crack or a pulley that has no bends so I like everything. It leaks to a point were it needs fluid every few days so I can wait it out.

I'm doing my steering coupling kit over again, did buy that last night. I waited 6 months for some Carter carbs..found new 500 no choke-vacuum ports for dual carbs..using two secondary carbs and works great. Two new 9502 carbs came up in the same month and I "won" both..so far have yet to see another.

You never know what ebay will have. Just have to look and wait. I go with either one if the price is right..might get both styles even if I can find them...for under $100.

I wished it had manual steering now but then I have a turn around garage to park in. Power is nice when the belt stays on, pump doesn't leak
