Need advice on installing wiring harness on 70 cuda
« on: September 24, 2009 - 11:18:07 AM »
Hello

My name is Rick. I purchased my 70 cuda' 340 in 1974.  I am in year 8 of a ground up restoration.  I am comming down to the end.  I had a electrical problem before I started the restoration.  I would be crusing down the road and the engine would cut out.  After pulling over  and cranking for a while, it would restart.  As this happened often I was able to isolate the problem to the main harness out of the fuse block.  By handling the wires, I could cause the engine to turn off.  Also if it cut out while I was driving, I could grab the harness and meve them around and the engine would restart.

Do to the above, I decided to rewire everything.  I bought all of the wiring from Year One.  Most were pretty easy, except the main harness.  I currently have the heater core, glove box, radio & steering column out of the car.  So there is lots of room to work.  It still seams impossible to get to all of the wires on the instrument cluster.  so here are my questions.
1.  What is the correct proceedure to install the harness?  Should I remove the dash cap?  Should  I remove the gages and if so, is there enough room to pull through the front to rewire?

2.  Is there a wiring diagram available so I can correctly reinstall?  None of the wires on the harness are labled.  Some are intitutive, but some are not.

What other advice can you give me on this?  I would love to here from you.

Thanks

Rick

Take the whole dash out.It will save you alot of time and hassle.I bought the same harness and it wasnt to hard  to install.Make sure you leave slack for the parking brake light to reach.

I would remove the dash as well, and install the harness to the dash and then put the dash in, makes life a lot easier.

 :iagree:
Pull the dash, it's not that hard.

Also, be glad you didn't set the car on fire back then.   :villagers:

Also, be sure to keep your old harness.  Don't start cutting or anything.  Some of the accessory harnesses are not included.

If you don't want to pull the dash, there should be enough slack to wire the gauges through the from, it's done all the time.

the typical issues are with the ammeter connections & the bulkhead connections through the firewall , I would start with cleaning & tightening all the connections at those points First

Thanks for all of th eadvice. The dash came out easily and than it was a breez to pull one wire off at a time and relpace.  The rest was pretty straight forward.

Thanks
