I am considering diamond forged pistons #51405.  0.030 overbore, -21cc dish, stock pin diameter.   Any other forged piston preferred over diamond?  Want file fit rings, what brand is best?  Sounds like some piston pin bosses hit the 4" stroke crank, Probe was named when searching this forum.   Obviously don't want that hassle.
Who to buy the piston/rings from??  Campbell Enterprises has mixed reviews on this forum.
I have a set of Eagle I beam rods.
Is cast steel crank OK for street use.  Eagle or Scat preferred??
All parts will be mic'd and inspected.
Phil

A friend of mine has a 408 cast crank stroker with roller cam etc etc. His pistons are hypereutectic. The Chally goes real good. Hard to move forward when it is accellerating. IE makes good power so I would say cast crank is plenty of crank if you are not looking for 600HP from a small block and don't want to rev above 5500 or so. CP did the startup on this engine.

I'm running the Diamond Forged, and an Eagle Cast crank.

Hopefully Moper will chime in on this, but I think 500HP is the max recommended level for the Cast cranks.

Not sure where He got them.

Maybe Mancini's.

I wouldn't want much more HP than 500 in a stock BLOCK. It really isn't a concern with overpowering the crank or the block with anything less than very good heads and cam anyway. And if you have less than very good ported heads the motor will throw out the anchor way before 6,000 rpm so a cast crank is more than adequate.

I used a Ohio Crankshaft cast crank in mine. They do real nice finish work, but I believe all the crank cores come from the same place.  Some of the lower cost Eagle stuff I've seen isn't what I would consider A+ machine work. :2cents:

Pretty much all the cast cranks are the same finish quality. That is, average. The Eagles say no more than 500hp, but I know of at least two exceeding that. The Scats (also MP's supplier) can go 600 safely, again with one I know running 565 plus 175hp NOS kit. If the hp gets over 500, replace the main caps with billet steel (2bolt) otherwise studding the mains and making sure the machine prep is top notch and the blocks will live fine.

Diamond makes a premium piston but I have not tried to use a stroker small block piston

The Eagle rods I used had some center to center issues. Don't know if the poor machine work is typical of all their stuff, but the Ohio crankshaft crank I used was spot-on in size and finish and had some super nice fillet work. My old boss (a 35 year master machinist) was really impressed with the work for the price. It was cheaper than either the Scat or Eagle. I think it was $290 a few years ago.

Put a 350 Chevy main cap next to a 340 cap and see how worried you are about the cap ever breaking.   I'd use some good ARP studs and not worry about it.

For me the main issue with a stock 40 YO block is the wall integrity of the bores with the increased piston speed and rod angularity of a stroker crank with an overbored block when I have seen stock stroke 360's with 400 HP~ split the bores more than once.

340 3.31" stroke piston speed @ 6,500rpm  = 3571 ft per minute
4" stroker motor average piston speed @ 6,500 rpm = 4316 ft per minute

i think the cast cranks are fine, but they cost more to balance because they are lighter than forged steel ?

Thats why I own a Dakota Ultrasonics...lol. Also why I dont use a hyper piston in any 4" engine like the lower cost strokers have. I've had to sleeve many a block after owning a good tester and learning how to use it.
