steering box attachment
« on: October 10, 2009 - 02:39:30 PM »
In some drawings I think I see a shim behind where the steering box attaches to the frame and in others not.  I have dug through my 38 boxes (joking), but it's a room full, of where the guy disassy the car before me and lucked up and found the 3 steering box bolts in an unlabelled bag, but there were no shims in the sandwich bag.  I sure hope I don't have to go digging again for another couple hours.  Are there shims between steering box and frame?  The drawing I saw them on they looked like shims open on one end.  I've seen similar on fenders on some old cars.  Thanking you, in advance, for taking time out of your day to read/type and help me.

THANK GOD.  I am so sick of digging through 700 boxes of mostly unlabelled CHEAP sandwich bags (not even freezer bags) that someone else did before they decided they were in over their head.  There was not one thing on the car he hasn't taken down to the last bolt/spring/screw.  Not one thing.

They don't typically have shims, but they can be shimmed to level out the center link between the idler and pitman. However, most just driving around to shows and such, it isn't a big deal. If your trying to optimize the bump steer curve from side to side, then shims would be required. The shims could be just the basic body panel type you mentioned earlier.

There are large lock washers under the bolt heads.  Make sure you have those.

I've only had 1 car come stock with the shims, my '64 Polara.  Anyone else find them?

never come across shims in there in all the cars I have worked on
I agree you can install them to add clearance fo the tie rods to torsion bar clearance if nessisary
