wheel/tire sizes, measurements
« on: July 27, 2004 - 05:29:51 PM »
I currently have on my cuda (bought it like this)
15x8 Ultra (centerline style) wheels - 3 3/4 inch back spacing
255/60R15 tires
air shocks on the rear

dont like the air shocks b/c they always leak down and then when i go over bumps the tires rub the inside of the fenders.  So, stock rallyes have 4.5" backspacing i believe, so i need to change wheels... which is good because i dont like those too much anyway.  Now, I've done a bunch of measuring and even talking to american racing about this.. and I dont see how you guys can fit 275's unless you've relocated the springs and gone with a lot of backspacing.  I just want to make sure that when i lay out the cash for the wheels I have the most rubber under the rear end as possible.  (spring re-lo kit is not out of the question, just seems like i would need even more backspacing, when i already have to custom order wheels b/c american racing doesnt normally make anything over 3 3/4 in the wheels im interested in)  here are my numbers:

Brake drum mounting pad to spring    6 1/2 inches
Brake drum mounting pad to outer fender lip (rub point)    5 1/2 inches
Brake drum mounting pad to inner fender well    8 1/4 inches
Total tire width mounted aired up ( measured laying on floor) bulge to bulge   10 1/2 inches
Tire bulge measured from outer edge of wheel lip    3/4 inches
Have 1 1/2 inches of clearance from tire bulge to leaf spring with this setup.

do these numbers seem on-target with anyone else's car?

also according to american racing "You can use a custom offset 15x8 with 4 3/4 backspacing, this way you can run a 255 tire series 50,60, or 70 depending on the heigth you want."

custom wheels sound expensive   :-\

Looks like you're a pro at this subject 360!   ;D  I didnt know the B body axle housing was narrower than the E body one.  So I could swap axle housings with no other fit problems and gain an inch on both sides?  Also, I've read in the Mopar Perf. catalog that the superstock springs cause the car to sit unlevel.  Is that true?  I'm trying to decide whether I want to do some mods and go for more tire or just get the tires under the fenders with all backspacing and continue running 355's.

My "cuda" is somebody's half-cloned 1970 AAR project that I bought about 9 months ago.  I'm in the process of undoing the AAR cloning.  I did get a '70 model 340 out of the deal   ;D  I'll post a picture later when i get home from work.

To use the B-body rear you do need the MP brackets (mine cost $65 about 10 years
ago).

You don't have to use the SS springs though, a good heavy duty A-body spring will
work

PICS ;D

8Pack.  Ross did an update to the software and had to delete a lot of the attachments.  You can modify your thread, delete they current attachments and add them again.  Should take care of it.

Update:  I've been talking to American Racing and my local tire shop.  Tomorrow morning I'm going out to the tire shop again and we are going to do some test-fitting before I order the wheels.  When I get it all on I'll post results and measurements (will be 6-8 weeks to get the wheels, custom offset)  incase anyone is interested in my combo.  That'll be at least one answer to the "how big of a tire can I get on my E-body" question.
