small block head casting # 4343646 ??? Update, pictures
« on: October 30, 2009 - 05:35:23 PM »
So I've located a set of heads I can pick up for a pretty decent price for one of my many 318's. The casting # on the heads is 4343646, and I can find very little info on them. They're listed as 85-91 318 or 360 heads in the same "section" as more famous 302/308 heads. They have smog ports and appear fairly similar to the 302/308 casting, but this is just from looking at this set and then looking at my 308's at home, I didn't have a chance to do a side by side comparison so I may be off. They were assembled too so I didn't get a real good eyeball on the entire port design. Supposedly they were ordered direct from Mopar, not pulled of another vehicle, although the only info I have on the casting # looks to be your basic 318/360 truck type use.

Does anyone know anything about them? I assume they're not identical to 302/308's as they'd have the same casting #, but does anyone know what's different? Or if they're a better choice than the standard J head etc (like I feel the 302/308's are)? Maybe the predecessor to the 302/308 heads?

Never heard of them but do they have the closed chamber like the 302 heads?  Look at the exhaust ports too and see if they are like the 308's with the nice port floor. If so GRAB THEM!  :2cents:

Just based on memory they look a lot like the 308's, but of course my ports look quite a bit different  :naughty:. What would be the the easiest way to see if they're closed chamber heads? I haven't seen a set of 302's before so I'm a little at a loss there. At this point I think I'm going to just go back and get them, they already have bigger valves than the stockers that all my 318's have.

Open chambers. Can't really see the floor of the exhaust ports....   :clueless:

Yeah, that's what I thought. They look very much like the 308's, but its hard to tell exactly how the ports are from the pictures. They already have 2.02's and 1.60's in them though, and the price is really good so I'll probably just get them. They've been shaved .010 already, and with the right pistons I think they'd make for a nice street engine.

308's have open chambers, only the 302 (and those 273 heads) have close chambers. But yeah I can not see..but the intake ports look a bit small, like those 308 heads. Say how big are the push rod holes / those 308 heads were for use with the factory roller cam.

Yeah it looks like 2.02 intakes, have those on my 318 and they worked out great.
