Stolen 1970 Charger ? ?
« on: October 30, 2009 - 06:33:01 AM »
I saw this on Moparchat and thought that it might need checking out by some of you super slueths, I left the email address at the bottom that the poster included.

I was driving home yesterday, and saw a bright yellow 1970 Charger R/T on the back of a tow truck, sitting across the street from an auto body shop in North Hollywood, CA. Out of curiosity, I stopped to check it out. It looked like it had been sitting under a tree for a couple years.

But -- big problem. The VIN tag read YM23T2C121186 - 1972 Chrysler Imperial / LeBaron VIN tag!

Also, there were no door locks and no ignition lock at all. Mileage was a bit over 25000 on the odometer.

I went across the street to the auto body shop and asked about the car. They said a friend had just bought it and was going to have it painted.

I came back later in the evening and opened the hood. the VIN on the fender tag was XS29U0G186260 , and the number stamps on the radiator support confirmed it.

It's a bright yellow car with black vinyl roof and black interior, no console, column automatic. No tach in the dash.

The correct 6 pointed rivets had been used to attach the Chrysler VIN tag, but they did not sit flat and flush like rivets normally do.

I'm already in touch with local police and I emailed Galen Govier about it also.

So if anyone knows anything about it, email me at thematch131@hotmail.com .
Dave

Interesting...

I wonder if the '72 Imperial/LeBaron dash will fit?  I understand that a Road Runner dash will fit a Challenger....maybe a swap?  The car could have been stolen or it could have been ina salvage yard sitting around and they popped the door locks and ignition to run it around the yard if they had no keys.  I bought a '69 LeMans like that from a friend that worked in a salvage yard.  :dunno:

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

In the interest of justice, I'd be glad to know someone had a questioning attitude especially if the car was stolen and I was the owner. Too many people just look the other way like the young girl in the news lately that was gang raped while some people watched & did nothing. BUT, I don't think I would have gone as far as opening the hood or doors. I don't think it constitutes a crime, but may get you hurt by the owner or another concerned citizen thinking you are stealing something. Since you've already gathered the info. I hope the info is helpful to the police if it is in fact stolen. I am sure the rightful owner would be grateful. But please be careful playing slueth. No need to get hurt!! :2thumbs:

I'm not saying I'd want someone doing it, but opening an unlocked door, I don't think is a crime?? I used to (back in the day) see someone that had left their headlights on (parked in a shopping center lot) and I'd simply open the door (if the car was unlocked) and turn off the lights. I didn't think It was a crime? :clueless:

member aussie challenger didnt see the car, he read the story on moparchat and posted it here.

I think you overdo here...  if I see a car I`m interested in I look through the windshield and read the vin, so I get some info I like to know...  I wouldnt go inside the car or anything, but I`m glad there is someone questioning a vin on a car it doesnt belong to.    I wouldn`t run to govier either...  :P

Just checked up on the original thread, this Charger was stolen several months ago and now thanks to an observant MOPAR guy the rightful owner will be getting his Charger back.   :bananasmi   :woohoo:
