I need some measurments if you could help - thanks
« on: November 08, 2009 - 07:51:08 PM »
Can anyone do me a favor, I need a measurement on a Challenger Tip and also a Cuda Tip, I need the thickness of the material used on a stock tip. Take the measurment in one of the rectangular exhaust ports.
Please use a Caliper or a Micrometer to measure this and not a tape measure.
I am having tips produced and I need a good measurement because I have ordered a few sets from different vendors and what I am finding is they are all different, eeeek.....
I do not have any original tips laying around and If i am going to have them reproduce, I want to make sure they are as correct as I can get them.
If anyone has bad tip that they could loan me I will be able to take all the measurement I need off it myself.

thanks to all that reply, Nick

One thing that I have not bought yet. Are you going to offer multiple diameters or just the OEM type?

I measured an original tip from a '70 Challenger R/T and got .090.  I measured some repro Cuda tips that I had sitting in a box and they were .075. Our Cuda has original tips on it,  but I don't have it here to measure, but it's probably the same as the Challenger.

Thanks - I have a repo set and they measure at .040.... now you know why I am concerned with getting measurements!

the material used for the chrome tip is just over .100 , reading .108 on my tips
the width inside is 3.78on the tip not inline with the tube & 3.810 on the one in line with the tube
the width outside is  3.910 on both
virtically they are 2.28 in the middle -2.365 near the corner Outside measurement  , the reason for this is that the middle of the tip is not flat but curved inward from bending the metal ,  the ID is hard to get as the bottom of the tip is recessed too far for the caliper to touch it
the space between the tips varies from .100 in the middle to .275 neaar the corners again because the metal is ronded from bending so the side is not true
the steel used for the rear box is only .070 thick
The one beef I have with virtually every tip is the deflector plate that directs 1/2 the exhaust flow into the tip not in line with the tube is left out , this does 2 things , in the cold the exhaust is visably coming out of both tips & secondly it changes the sound , I have asked TTI to add the deflector to the tips on many occaisions & I have discussed this with Sam the owner of TTI but they still produce the tips without the deflector ... to be correct the tip Must have the deflector in them

CP - thanks for the offer but Wade sent me one of his tips the other day. As far as the measurments go you are correct, they are curved and I am almost positive that any mfg I work with will not duplicate the curves but I will stress that the tips include the divider as I measured in one of Wades tips. I would post the info I have but I just got home after spending the day in the ER, Stroke diagnosis when I was brought in and later the outcome was was not a stroke, thank God.
They did tell me that after the CT scan they found a large Cyst against my brain and when they compared my CT from 6 or 7 years ago it was also there, they also ruled out that the cyst caused my problems this morning. I will post my info in a day or two when I am up and about and feeling better, got to go get some rest....

Hey Nick, sounds like you are doing a really good thing. When you get them done put me down for a set, seriously. How long in the development stage in your guesstimation.

I could not sleep.....

As far as your question, I have been working out the bugs for a while but now that I have the correct dimensions it may take a little while longer, I will know once I complete the drawings for all the tips, I still need an original Cuda tip if you have one!!!!

So to give you an idea on how I am going about this, here are my models that I made from the original tips, from this point i will turn them into drawings and hand them off to a mfg. I make the models so I can visually check the looks and compare them to original pieces, it is much better than just dimensions on paper!!!!

CP - Second pic - I took the top section of metal off and as you can see in the second picture and you can see the divider, as I said, I try to be complete......

Nick, it sounds like you need to get your priorities straight! :)  Take care of yourself first, and it will leave a lot more time for projects down the line!  I hope you are feeling better and the docs can find something to take care of what all ails you.  :)
