73 Challenger 360 LA block from a 727 to A-833 23 spline
« on: November 24, 2009 - 01:46:32 PM »
I just picked up a 23 spline 4 speed for my challenger I've been running a tci 727 for about 4 years/10,000 miles and want to feel a 4 speed behind may 450hp 360 engine, all I have is the trans and a set of 70 b-body pedals, the trans looks and feels good it was said to have came out of a 71 340 challenger.  what should I do for the other parts and will them pedals even work, bellhousing new/used ?  clutch? street car, shifter new/used, any help would be great. thanks 4 speeds are new to me.

Well there are a lot of parts you are going to need. I doubt the pedals are going to work. Below is a rough list of what you will need and some rough pricing from memory

bellhousing (used) $50-$100
flywheel (new or used) $100-$400
clutch kit (new) $150 and up
clutch fork (new or used) up to $75
clutch fork rod kit (new) $50
z bar (new or used) up to $75
z bar service kit (new) $50
z bar frame bracket (new) (welds onto frame rail) $20
pedals (new or used) up to $250
pedal to z bar arm (new or used) $40
clutch pedal firewall bracket (new or used) $20
firewall grommet for clutch rod (new) $10
pistol grip shifter (available new or used) $100 to $500
shift rods (new or used) $100
shift boot and bezel (new) $50
4 speed floor hump (new) $150
4 speed carpet (new) $150
transmission shifter tabs (new or used) (if your transmission does not have them already) $35

most parts can be sourced from Brewers Performance, Passon Performance, or ebay. FYI this can end up being quite an expensive conversion, the transmission was the cheap part.

MOST  IMPORTANT, does the rear housing on the A833 have two mounting pads for the shifter? If it only has one then it is not an easy conversion and the shifter handle will not come out through the floor in the correct place.    :working:

I use McLeod clutches exclusively
there is a list of all the needed parts to do the swap in the archives section
you need to have a hole in the back of the crankshft to clear the nose of the input shaft + you need to fit a pilot bushing or brg in the rear of the crank but the later Dakota roller brg will fit any crank .
A lot of the parts can be located used but the conversion will still add up in cost
