Phil has nailed it.
1972-1974 rally versions had the taillight panels were painted satin black.
1972-1974 base model versions were argent silver textured paint.
The grilles were painted satin black on the rally version as well, excluding the chrome trim of course.
The base models were painted argent silver.
Now, there were a few oddballs, (aren't there always?) so there may be a few cases where dark argent could have inadverently shown up on a 1972 challenger, but it is by no means the correct finish.
One of the many reasons they went wth the textured paint was to hide the poor surface finish of the pot-metal castings. The low gloss texture hid inconsistancies in the finish.
I beleive that the taillamp panel was masked and operator painted with the same mask before the lights were placed on the car, after the car came off the paint line. From that point, the next guy on the line knew which pre-painted lights to hang on the car.
So, if you paint the tailpanel first, paint the tail lamps satin first, then mask the lamps for the argent, then spray the panel with argent the same time you spray the lights, then you would probably nail it.
