1973 Challenger
« on: November 23, 2009 - 03:23:53 AM »
My dad and me went and looked at a '73 Challenger today for sale. Wondering what it's worth. It's a factory 318 2bbl auto car. Buckets & console. Red with a white vinyl top and white interior. Magnum 500s. Fender tag is missing. Lower quarters and lower parts of the fenders have bondo. Vinyl top is bubbled in some spots (not rust bubbles...like popped up) but the roof seems solid as far as I could tell. Paint is apperentley 4 years old and shines nice. Dash pad is cracked, console door dosen't close properly. Needs new armrests and carpet. Front floor pans seem decent but minor rust. Could use a trunk floor or atleast extensions (has a hole about 2x2 inches). Ran kind of rough but then again, it was cold today and the car wasn't warmed up. One exhaust pipe sits tilted for some reason. They painted the top half of the engine but not the bottom. Some of the gauges don't work. Underside (frame rails) seem good. PS: We are in Canada so your guys estimates...if you guys could possibly do it in Canadian $, I'd appreciate it or atleast say $US for I can convert it :2thumbs:

I bought a similarly equiped 1970 Challenger a year ago for $16k usd.  But the economy has continued it's downward trend since then so the same car would likely only be worth $14k today!  While this car has great "bling" being red & white, it's a 1973 model year which is worth less (please don't read "worthless")!  It comes down to how much you really like 1973 Challengers (my first was a 1973, then a 1974 and now a 1970) and your ability to do any of the work you want done as it will likely be too expensive to pay hired help.  And keep in mind this really is just a HOBBY, as in something for you and dad to enjoy together because you will likely only recoup 50 cents on every dollar spent.  In my book, it's maybe an $8k usd car as it sits.

I bought a 74' Chally just over a year ago.  With very similar options.  California car with only two small cracks in the paint, in the lower rear quarter.  And two on each side of the rear window.  The rest of the body is very solid.  No rust holes. Dash pad was cracked badly. Needs new carpet. Console in about the same condition. Paint chipped on ashtray. Driver seat was ripped.  But rest of interior in really good shape. Paint was okay about a 20-30 footer. 318 motor was freshly rebuilt runs really strong and sounds real good with new H pipe and exhaust system. Tires and wheels in good condition.  Lots of tread left on the BF's.  Has wiring problem somewhere.  Turns over sometimes and and sometimes does not.  Needs a new wiring harness.  Someone used butt connectors on all the wiring about 3 inches from the bulk head on the fire wall. Needs some tranny work.  Needs all new bushings up front.  All in all this is stuff that can easily be repaired. Just need to find some time to do them.  Guy was asking $9500 I ended up giving $8400 U.S dollars.  Its just what you are willing to pay.  And how bad you want the car.  In my case i was looking for a cruiser.  I wanted an e-body and the car was located 5-miles from my house.  Hope that helps.

They originally wanted $16,500. Then dropped it to $15,800. They dropped it to $13,000 on the phone. My dad said he would pay $8,500 most for it...

Well, considering the rattle can detail job that has been done to it, I would suspect that there is more going on at other locations around the car. That being said, I would bet that if your pops waves 7,500 and them and then threatens to walk, they will deal in a hurry (unless they are into it for more than that, in which case  :dunno:)

Has wiring problem somewhere.  Turns over sometimes and and sometimes does not.

I know that feeling oh so well. My Duster is doing the exact same thing. It's funny, the guy said he had a feeling we knew our Mopars....my dad said "Yeah but he knows way more" and pointed to me ;D Thanks for the help so far guys, we'll see what happens. I would love if he got it but we'll see if he really wants it. I priced out about $1,200 worth of parts it needs...
