Seeing as she was a woman and probably facing rape and death from this scum bag, I accept what she did. However with a shotgun she could have just as easily taken out both of the guys knees/groin area. He may have bled to death but at least some jerk attorney could't deny self defense over homicide or even murder. An attorney could say she used the time on the phone and the time it took him to break in as also time for her to intentionally kill the guy, especially also with what was said on the recorded 911 call. But if she will not face any charges I say good for her. 

I've always said I won't hesitate too long to shoot an intruder, but I will not intend to kill him. Take out his legs and he is not going anywhere. But if he has a gun................that's a different situation and probable outcome.

I have a concealed carry permit. In North Carolina, if you shoot someone, you have to be in fear of the other person taking your life. Meaning, you shoot to kill, or you better not shoot. At least that's what you tell the cops. If you just hit his knee, say it's because you were nervous.

I have always been told  the if the situation presents itself and you end up pulling the trigger on someone (no matter where it is), you always say you were in fear of your life or harm to someone you are protecting.  Once you say you were defending property, you are open to prosecution.   
I feel bad for this lady, but she did the right thing.   Of course she could have taken the guys knees out, but my gut tells me she didn't have much trigger time with the gun.  If that is the case, and she is clearly scared, I would say you would tend to aim for the largest part of the target.
