Japanese & German WW2 veterans- wonder how they feel
« on: December 02, 2009 - 08:22:19 PM »
This is about as off-topic as it gets, but I know there are some good thinkers out there.

I don't know what made me think about this, but I wonder how veterans who served in causes that history has discredited or deemed immoral feel about their time in the service. Does anyone know what the attitudes of the Japanese and German populace is today about WW2? Is the war something that is not discussed? Do you suppose German civilians during WW2 drove around with some kind of "support out troops"  stickers on their VWs?

I know how US vets feel about their service in general, but just wondered if all soldiers everywhere feel pretty much the same.

That is a very interesting question, I would love to know the answer to this myself. Maybe if we have a German speaking person on here they could get on a German forum of some sort and ask?

I know my Grandfather will never buy a "jap car".. I guess I respect that and never will either. he was in the infamous Bataan/Corigador death march.

I suspect pride of service might be related to what they actually did in the war. For example. I can see U-boat captians and Luftwaffe pilots having a real different attitude from death camp guards.

Having known several Japanese over many years they have said that WW2 was reported quite differently to them than what really happened. The people I spoke with were suprised to hear our version.   :clueless:
When Hollywood made the movie Pearl Harbor they toned down the attack scene so as not to offend the Japanese.   :stomp:
Most German people I have met want to forget that era because they feel that they were taken in by Hitlers oratory skills.

Having talked to several German veterans of World War II, I can say that most were extremely proud of their service and their units; including the members of the Waffen SS.  The average Soldier doesn't know much more about what was going in the greater war around them beyond the men to their right and left and a couple hundred meters to their front.  They have an esprite de corps with their unit, a brotherhood with those with whome they serve, and sense of patriotic duty to their country.  The number of soldiers who were actually present at the time or who were directly involved with what we define as war crimes is very very small.  As the "greatest generation" passes on, historians are beginning to look at WWII more objectively and see the war as being less than black and white.  The German and Japanese militaries committed horrible acts against civilian populations, but so did every other nation; including the US (think of the massive firebombings of civilian populations).  The Soviet Union's revenge against German civilians was brutal and has been well documented.  This is not to excuse anyone.  But as an Army officer and military historian myself, I try not show too much bias when writing about the war.

I would think that their love and pride for their homeland sent them into the ranks. But we need to remember in every instance that once they were serving their country they were actually under and answerable to their CO. Truthfully, for instance I find it very hard to beleive that the guard at the German death camps "willingly" carried out the crimes there. In fact I have heard and read of some of those guards doing what they could (little as it may have been) to diminish their sufferings. You wonder how many may have been killed themselves for failure to carry out orders of Hitler? I'm not morally supporting or condoning anything that we are aware of through history as were are told, but the Japanese were the most fervent in their service, even to the point of suicide over being taken captive, even in the civilian ranks when allied forces would control thier local territory. How do most of us feel about dropping the bombs on Japan civilian targets that ended the war, and even to the point of putting Japanese/Americans in prision camps here in the U.S following Pearl Harbor.  It sadly was all necessary at the time. WAR IS HELL !  You fight a war to win it, otherwise you need to pull the troops out and bring them home. We all have through the years lost family and friends to war, and when they do come home whether it be in a flag drapped casket, physically maimed, or luckly coming home in good physical shape, respect and thank them. They served when asked !   :wavingflag:  :canada:  :nzflag:  :aussie:  :england:  :netherlands:
