Remove the pump and put your finger on the rod while somebody turns over the engine without starting it. If it doesn't move much, you might have wiped the lobe on the cam (I doubt it though). If it moves in and out, crank the engine until the rod is deepest in the block. Remove the rod and put a good sized glob of grease on the rod and put it back in. The grease will hold the rod deep into the block while you bolt the pump back on and will keep it where it belongs.

:horse:have you checked the rubber fuel line between the sending unit and gas line,it might be sucking air.also have you checked with a coffe cup to see if fuel isnt coming.check all rubber fuel line before the pump.

Took the pump out AGAIN , real slow trying to see how the push rod and the pump arm were lined up . It looked as if the push rod was all the way down and the pump arm was off to the side . Taking Shanes advise I put my finger on the push rod and it was moving in and out .
Next I put a glob of grease on the push rod which held it in while I put things back together . My baby now starts right up and sounds great .
My best bet would be that the push was worn out and then I put the pump in wrong . The rod was worn down 1/4 of a inch so now I can't wait to see how it runs . Sorry to say it will be at least April or May to see if there is any improvement . Either way thanks everyone and once again you guys came though .

For what it's worth, my pushrod was only worn down 1/8th of an inch, and it doomed me.
Fine at startup, but not worth much after the engine warmed up. Tow trucks loved me.

This thread has got me thinking,
How prone is the small block style eccentric to failure? It sees plenty of oil I would imagine but now I'm curious if just a little wear affect that type of set-up as well.

Small block eccentric is a offset stamped disk that is bolted to the end of the cam. it won't wear like the one on a BB cam because of the missing sulphur and Zinc. I think the fuel pump arm will wear out first and that gets replaced with the fuel pump.
