Is this fenger tag legit? Barry?

Hey barry, i was considering buying a car a little while back and i was wondering if reproduction dash tags can be bought anywhere or if that is illegal. The car had a dash swap years ago, i think they wanted to convert it to rallye guages and just switched the whole dash. The fender tag, door tag, firewall, and cowl all match but the dash was different.

Check your local laws, the vary by state. Some states will allow the original manufacturer to issue a replacement tag, but Chrysler no long uses the same type. This is why most cars with missing VIN tags end up with state issued replacements.

There are black market sources for them, but in the eyes of the law they are labeled counterfiets & you would not want to be caught with one. Federal laws apply with federal time if convicted.

To clarify PRX9, it was Gran Coupe only for 1971.

It was also available in 1970 & was not Gran Coupe specific.

Hey Barry, the TAG to me looks like P6X9, not PRX9.

Do the state reissues look anything like the originals? Also i would just hate to buy that car and then go to the DMV and them tell me that they wouldnt reissue me a tag.

ALWAYS check with your state DMV / BMV before buying a car with no VIN tag. Have your insurance agent run the number through the NICB as well. Not all states share data, but the NICB records do not go away.

The state issued VINs I have seen so far look nothing like the originals & they are normally located in the door jamb area.

I certainly don't have the eye that Barry has for this kind of thing, but the VIN kinda' looks like B527 instead of BS27, and there is another thing about the VIN that doesn't exactly look kosher.
