RTV On Timing Cover and Water Pump Bolts
« on: December 15, 2009 - 03:58:40 PM »
Can someone tell me exactly what bolts get RTV on the timing cover and the water pump?  A picture would be great. How about the head bolts for the alternator and the power steering pump as well?   Thanks

Dave

For bolts that thread in to the water jacket I use that Indian Head / High Tack gooey stuff on the bolt threads. Works very well and sometimes the bolts can be taken off and place back in and they still will seal, if not a dap will do it.

RTV could work but the bolt might be hard to get out and then the threads will need to be cleaned.

When the threads are clean I stick the threads right in to the bottle. Kind of messy but it works.

I have never had much success with RTV. Good sticky gasket cement is best.

Small blocks I think it is only the two end header bolts that go into the water jacket?? Big blocks they all need sealing. As well as the bolts that hold the pump to the pump housing. I didn't think small block pump bolts needed anything on them though?

Too many years since i worked on a LA engine... :-[

the 4 long bolts taht go through the water pump & timing cover in the tops corners also go into the warer jacket & need sealing , the two lower bolts on the water pump go into the timing cover & & are open to the oil inside the timing cover so seal those as well , I use white teflon thread sealer
