Cleaning dash harness, what should i use?
« on: December 20, 2009 - 02:17:43 PM »
I have removed my dash harness to repaint dash. I would like to clean up my dash wiring harness since i cant afford to buy a new one($599.00 a little steep).  My question is what should i clean the harness with , I don't want to damage or further dry out any of the wires or connections. Just soap and water?  Thanks and Happy Holidays to all

I'm assuming you just mean the dust/ dirt that has acumulated on the harness, so I would say to use some sort of cleaning wipes followed by a wipe down with a damp rag. then you can freshen up the wrap from there with some new stuff.
I would stay away from the full on washing with soap and water  :2thumbs:

I've cleaned lots of stuff like weatherstrip, plastics, including wires with mineral spirits with no apparent harm but you may wipe off some ink printing.

Get a big bucket and soak it overnight using ORIGINAL Dawn dish detergent.

To do it correctly, the wrap should be removed, then soaked, dried and then rerapped.

Electronic cleaner in a spray can also works really good.  And it evaporates quickly.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Use a product called Electrosol. Should be available at electrical parts wholesalers or most hardware stores. Doesn't damage anything electrical except keep it away from electronic circuit boards.

To clean contacts you could use some Deodxit D5.  It works wonders on my vintage hi fi gear and tube amps.
