What trans to use
« on: January 04, 2010 - 12:22:19 PM »
I'm in the planning building stage for my 73 Cuda'. I want to put a new gen 6.1 Hemi in, and would like to know what trans to use. I've seen 545RFE, Keisler Trans, or 4L60E, which trans is best? Which Trans will fit the best? Etc... Any feedback on this would be great.

Thanks

You have to ask yourself if your willing to mod the Car to fit the 545rfe. Than if your willing to live with the lack of performance the 545 has in comparison.

I have two customers one finished one in the process of replacing the 545 with out 4l60e kit for that exact reason.

I'd lean towards a 727 with a gear vendors or a 518 overdrive. Both are cheaper and easier to install. There is a thread on here somewhere where a member installed a 518 and was able to hook up the stock slap stick shifter and did not modify the body to make it fit.

He may have but that is not the norm.  Our 4l60e kit is a direct bolt in. The only thing you have to do it bend the pinch weld where the floor pan and firewall meet.

The Gv just adds weight to the old drivetrain and it also hard to get driveline angles correct.

We guarantee driveline and you will use the stock shifter.

Hey Gene buddy,I would never go down to a GM transmission to replace my Torqueflite!!! I mean the 727 style drivetrain survives behind a Hemi! I have seen stock GM trucks destroy a 4L60-E.

I would stick with the tried and true 727 or the 518.  I am still considering the 518 at some point myself.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development
