Window trim removal.......help!!
« on: January 09, 2010 - 02:53:25 PM »
I need some serious input here on how the heck to get the trim off of my 70 Challenger.  I am trying to get the chrome window trim off of my car, both front and back.  All of the trim is in perfect shape, not something I can say for the car, so that being said I am not worried about scratching the car.  I have a set of plastic trim tools from Napa, but I am getting nowhere....slowly.  The trim is really tight to the window and car side.  Apparently it fits perfect.  One of the clips was rusted and I was able to work it until it broke, but that is the only "success" I have had.  It looks like the way those clips work is they clip on the car side of the trim and need to be pulled toward the window in order to release the trim.  Is this correct?  If so, how do you do that?  The plastic trim tools only help me wedge it up from the window side.  I thought about making a tool.  One that has a little hook to pull the clip loose once I wedge the trim up and get access, but that seems like way too much work.  What am I missing?  Any input would be much appreciated.  FYI - I am not worrried about damaging the weather stripping or gaskets.  I am going to eventually take out the windows and strip everything down to metal.

That right you need that special tool if you dont have it it will be hard to get them off .whit that tool all you do is slide it along the trim and pull back on the clip.

That tool pictured and use a thin flat gasket scraper or putty knife. Wedge the putty knife between the panel and molding and put a little pressure away from the panel then use the tool pictured to find the clip and wiggle it away from the molding.

Just used that tool to take the trim off my back window tonite.  Only problem I had was so much urethane was in the way that the clips were bonded in. What a PITA!
If I cant fix it, it's broke

That tool will for sure do it!!  I kept trying to figure out how to pull on the clip, to release the trim, from the window side.  That little hook will go behind the clip from the window side and pry the clip loose. That's great.  I'm going to make one of those out of sheet metal and use it.  Hell yeah....thanks a lot.  I'll let you know how it turns out!!
