Shaker Cable hole.
« on: July 04, 2005 - 03:47:46 PM »
Did all 'Cuda bodies come with the shaker cable hole from the factory?  :dontknow:  If not, does anyone know how they put the hole in the firewall?

I think there is a hole in my firewall for the shaker, howerver I do not know how to tell if it was there from the factory or if someone put it there over the last 35 years!

The hole is not punched out... it looks drilled.  As a matter of fact, it appears to be drilled from the engine compartment into the interior area of the car.  I can feel a slight edge left over from the hole being drilled.  Also, it is not perfectly round... close, but not perfect.

There is also a dimple next to this hole that appears to be a alignment point to drill another hole.  Is this the way the shaker cable hole starts... as a dimple? :???:

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Grerat.... can anyone post a picture of where the hole should be?  I was just told that the hole is in the wrong spot.

Also, if anyone is close to the northwest, feel free to come over and just kick me in the nuts.  I think I'm numb to it now.

Cody,
Been trying to find the answer to this question as well. I was told that the cable goes through a hole above the accelerator pedal. I installed my hood last week and the only thing left is the cable. With the engine in the car, I'm assuming that I will have to drill it from the inside.  Could be tricky.

Here is a firewall shot on my 71s which is a n96 car.  The hole on the left was drilled in error at the factory, then plugged with a capplug.  The reason I say it was done at factory, was that it was drilled before the interior firewall insulation was installed, and this was an unrestored car.  The one on the right is the correct spot.  This area on A/C cars has the 2 lines run through, shaker cars got the hole on the one side as seen here.  The yellow car is a real n96 71 Challenger I restored.

So you're saying that the hole in Cody's firewall is correct? I was told way wrong on this one. My car is an a/c car, but I never used the a/c so I removed it and plan to  eventually rework the firewall and install my extra non a/c heater box later. I think for now, I will drill a hole slightly to the right of the a/c holes. I do plan to remove the evaporator core and place a painted to match panel inside the firewall until I get my chal convert back together. Not enough time in the day.
I'm beginning to regret selling my other non a/c '71 cuda now. It was an N96 car originally.

The hole in my N96 Challenger is in the same place as N96x2's, but the hole feels smooth and perfectly round. I don't feel any sharp edges on either side. Did you look under the dash where the shaker cable goes to see if holes were drilled as well in the area where the shaker door actuator lever goes?

Cody, whichever way this goes....check out the motor stamping boss plate (under the block) can you take pics of that? In light of all this, you might need to authenticate whether the cuda is indeed a true V code. The shaker in the picture back in the'80's looked rough, as if missing the trim ring or something that normal shakers usually have (I can't pinpoint exactly what).

We'll all hang with you on this and ride it out to the end. No need to kick your nuts. I think you should get that $5K back from the owner AND decide to either restore the car for keeps OR sell it if you want a factory shaker car with a real 440 six pack, like I think you were looking for in the first place

This is not a matching motor, so I know that it won't match.  However, the rest of the car is fine.  It's a V code car with a few options added from a previous owner!

The person I bought the car from has been more than helpful & willing to do what is right.  I decided to keep the car (he would have bought it back if I wanted) and the seller agreed to refund me some of the original price.  It's still going to be fun! :grinyes:

So, it looks like I have a 70 Cuda 440-6 with a ralley gauge, 4-speed and a Dana 60.  Check in with me tomorrow to see what options the car loses through the night.....

I have to tell you guys, I have met more honest and good people in the mopar circle than in any other group of poeple.  Thanks for the help.

Something is not right here....

The only cars I can find pics of that are factory shaker cars (undergoing restos) all have the shaker cable hole in the same spot as mine!  Can anyone explain that?

All Cudas!  All with the shaker cable hole I have!

I know nothing of assembly line procedures but here`s my guess-those dimples are there for assembly line workers to locate holes for different options.I don`t know how they would make the hole but if they used a hole saw or something similar one hole might come out nice and round and the next could look like yours.Maybe the guy had the Monday morning shakes? If they used a greely punch or some other method that makes real nice round holes then maybe yours was done by a previuos owner to add the option. How nice are the holes on the other shaker cars?
